Favourite discovery of the year

For me this is the discovery that drug store brands have really blossomed within the last year with many affordable products providing results as good as high end ranges. Brands such as Sleek, MUA, VIVO and Elf cosmetics have all impressed me this year and I will definitely be buying more affordable products in 2012.

Sorry for the lack of visual stimulation in this post but I just wanted to share a list of my favourites, many of which I have reviewed on my blog before or used in a FOTD. I would love to see some more lists like this on other blogs so please feel free to use my list and include your own favourites!

I would like to thank all of you for your support during this first year of blogging and I am looking forward to being part of this wonderful blogging community in 2012!

What did Santa bring?

So Christmas is officially over for another year and it went all too quickly for my liking! But luckily I have some amazing presents to keep my festive spirit going into the New Year and some gorgeous gifts to add to my ever growing beauty collection. Here are a few of the gifts I received from family, boyfriend and Santa of course......

My boyfriends parents bought me the Jo Malone Pomegranate noir body cream and body wash to match the fragrance I received for my birthday. Now the lovely smell will linger even longer and I have never had the pleasure of using Jo Malone body products so I can't wait to treat myself to a pampering evening with these!

Santa left me some lip goodies in my stocking including two Topshop lipsticks in Rumour has it and Infrared which I will review soon and a fabulous Vaseline collection with a cool extra large tin containing four different balms inside. I cant wait to try the cocoa butter version, it smells good enough to eat.

My parents bought me this perfume which I had never even tried before but they must know me better than I thought because I love the scent and it is totally my kind of fragrance. The bottle is a great design and I will be wearing this during the next few days to prepare for a review on it but so far I like it!

My boyfriends parents also bought me lots of OPI. I think my obsession is well known by everyone now and now I won't need to buy any polish for a long time! I got lots of colours and a base and top coat which I needed to I am really pleased with this collection.

No you are not seeing things. This is the Bobbi brown luxury make up case which I put on my luxury beauty gift guide post! My boyfriend has secretly been reading my blog and decided to buy me this amazing case despite it being on my "never going to happen" wish list. He gets major brownie points for not only buying an amazing present but also listening to me/reading my blog :)

Just one photo was not enough so I took a few. So pretty and luxurious!

Inside my Bobbi Brown make up case was an extra treat. Tom Ford Make up! I have been lusting after some since it launched but the high price tag meant I just couldn't justify spending that much on myself however the boyfriend did well once again and proved that he does hear me when I walk around Selfridges commenting on how much I adore high end make up. He chose a gorgeous eye palette and nail polish which I will of course try out this New years Eve and tell you guys all about very soon.

I then opened the drawer of the make up case and couldn't believe my eyes when I found this Marc by Marc Jacobs purse! I already own a black leather handbag from Marc by Marc and the rose gold watch, both bought by the man, and now this beauty completes my collection! I have wanted a designer purse for years and this purse is perfect. It is classic, understated and feels incredibly luxurious. I was very spoilt by the boyfriend this year!

My parents bought me the Clarisonic Mia in blue as my main beauty gift this year. I have been longing for one for months now after seeing rave reviews on beauty blogs and shopping sites but couldn't afford to treat myself to one so my wonderful mum and dad bought it for me :) My two sisters asked for one too so we all have one in a different colour. I have only used it twice but I am already loving the results. I will give it a month or so before I review it for you as this is how long most people tend to have to wait before seeing significant changes in their skin.

This is just a selection of the gifts I received this year and I am so happy with all the presents! I am a little sad that it is all over but thankfully these gifts will keep me content in 2012 and remind me how lucky I am!

Festive FOTD

In my previous post I mentioned my new obsession, Chanel illusion d'ombre eyeshadow in Ebloui, a divine mousse texture in a bronze shimmer tone, which I have been wearing this on many nights out during this festive party season. I love the way the product glides on easily, shimmers beautifully and stays on all evening. Here are a few photos of me wearing this product along with some more of my current favourites!

Foundation - Chanel vitalumiere aqua foundation in B30
Concealer - MAC studio fix in NC30
Bronzer - Chanel soleil de tan
Blusher - VIVO baked blush in Rosy
Highlighter - MAC strobe cream
Mascara - Bourjois volumizer
Eyeliner - Maybelline gel liner
Eyeshadow - Chanel illusion d'ombre in Ebloui/Sleek matte black
Eyebrows - MAC cork
Lipstick - MAC Shy girl
Lipstick - Revlon Colourburst in Peony

I love this look for evenings out because it is smokey but not too dramatic and uses my favourite blend of browns, blacks and nudes for a sophisticated but glamorous feel.

Many of these products are my new favourites so I will be doing more in depth reviews very shortly to help you see the colours and textures. I hope you like the look but one of my new years resolutions will have to be to try more colourful eye make up looks as I am a little too comfortable with my neutrals ;)

Chanel illusion d'ombre - Ebloui

I'm back! I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and thank you to all my followers as I am now officially over 50 members! Now lets get back to all things make up and pretty......

Its official, I have fallen in love with an eyeshadow! Trust me to fall in love with a shadow that costs £22.50 but Chanel rarely disappoint me so I had a feeling I would adore this product before I even saw the results. I purchased this shadow a few weeks ago whilst out shopping for Christmas gifts and couldn't resist treating myself to it after about a week of drooling over the photos and swatches online.

By the time I got to the Chanel counter many of the shades were sold out including Mirifique a dark black colour and Illusoire a grey silver tone. I had been on the hunt for a dark smokey colour and so was a little upset to find that these shades were already sold out but decided to go for Ebloui a bronze brown tone which is like nothing I already own and I wondered how and when I would wear the shade but I knew that I had to try the formula and decided to take the plunge! And I am SO glad that I did! The results were incredible and I have worn this shade about 5 times already on nights out over this Xmas period.

Chanel Illusion d'ombre in Ebloui - £22.50 www.debenhams.com

The packaging is typical Chanel glossy black with gold finish which immediately screams luxury and the  little jar that the product comes in has a lovely screw top lid with the famous C's on. It is small and compact which makes it great for my handbag but the amount of product is good and because you need a small amount each time applied to the eyes, you get the feeling that the pot will be lasting you a while. Especially because I will be using this shadow for evenings out or special occasions I don't think I will run out any time soon.

So lets talk about the product itself. The shadow is longwear and luminous in its finish which means that once it goes on it will last all night so taking it out with you is not essential. I am always nervous taking an expensive make up product out at night so to know that I can leave it safe at home is always a bonus.

The texture is divine. It is like a mousse/cream which is incredibly soft to the touch which makes it a pleasure to use on the eyes and it feels lightweight once applied unlike many powder shadows which can feel heavy, particularly if creating a dramatic smokey eye look. The colour is gorgeous, a bronze with a hint of red making it less beige than I had imagined and it really stands on its own as a colour unlike some of my bronze/brown matte shadows which I often need to use with another colour to get a strong eye look. The particles of shimmer within the shadow are what make the finished look so fantastic and gives a hint of classy iridescence rather than cheap glitter.

There is a small brush included with the shadow which is lovely for gifting or for those who don't own many make up brushes however I enjoy using my fingers to apply the product because it dries fairly quickly and is so easy to blend using the warmth of my fingers and I have better control of how much I am applying.

Overall, this product looks and feels expensive which in my opinion makes it worth paying over £20 for. I wouldn't usually want to spend this amount of money, especially on an eyeshadow, however this is honestly one of the best eye products I have ever used and as soon as the other colours come back in stock I will be buying them! Look out for a festive Christmas party look using this amazing product!

Christmas Nails!

This is going to be my last blog post for a few days so I can make the most of presents, food and spending time with friends and family :) So I thought I would leave you with a festive post and show you the nails I will be wearing on Christmas day! This shade was from my boyfriend for my birthday a few weeks ago and is from the Nicole by OPI Kardashian collection. "Follow me on glitter" is a dark grey with flecks of glitter and shimmer in and is the perfect shade for this season because its sparkly but because its grey it will go with any outfit I choose to wear over the next few days. I love it!

"Follow me on glitter" - £8.50 www.lenawhite.co.uk

Merry Christmas to all my followers and readers!

The Versatile Blogger award

I am so chuffed to have been given this award by Ellie from http://thelipssayitall.blogspot.com/
I adore her blog and so this award means so much to me coming from her!

As a fairly new blogger I had never heard of this award but Ellie explained the rules for me on her blog:

1. Thank the person who nominated you and share their link with your followers

2. Share 7 random facts about yourself

3. Give the award to 15 of your favourite bloggers

I have discovered so many new blogs in the last few months so being to nominate my favourites for this award is a real pleasure :)
Sorry to anyone of you who have already received this award but that just means you are extra special I guess ;)

Ok so let me try and share some random and hopefully interesting facts with you!

1. I am a vegetarian because I don't like the taste of meat and I love animals too much to eat them!
2. I am a leftie which means I often smudge my writing, am supposed to be creative and am definitely clumsy.
3. I am only 5ft1 which means that I am often mistaken for an 16 year old despite being in my mid twenties, yay!
4. I have two younger sisters which means I get to force them to let me give them makeovers and have someone to talk about girly things to when my boyfriend has had enough hehe
5. My favourite programme is Glee. I studied theatre and used to sing so this programme is the perfect combination of music and comedy.
6. I have a strange obsession with the crime channel and books about serial killers. My favourite show on the crime channel is the first 48 and women who kill. My sister and I often read books about killers on holiday and get some strange looks!
7. I have a slight obsession with painting my toe nails and couldn't step out the house without a colour on them. I have to re do them every 2 weeks. When I see women with unkept feet in the summer I can barely look!

Here are the bloggers who I would like to give this award to:

Make up Storage

So after years of stuffing my make up and beauty products into various baskets, bags and drawers I decided it was time to get some storage big enough to carry my collection without having to rummage for 10 minutes to find one product! I decided that Ikea was the best place to look for some affordable but effective storage ideas and came across a drawer desk on wheels with plastic drawers and a wooden frame. I chose this because it can be wheeled around my room or bathroom but is sturdy enough to carry my ever growing beauty collection!

Ikea Antonius white - £44.59 www.ikea.com

I already own a few wicker baskets which I have previously had sitting on my desk top filled with beauty goods so I decided to use these to split the drawers into sections for my smaller items.

Top Drawer
Front Basket - Face make up: foundations, blushers, bronzers, concealers, highlighters
Back Basket - Eye make up: mascaras, eyeliners, eyeshadows, lashes

Second Drawer
Front Basket - Tools: brushes, puff, sponges, disposables, mirrors, eyelash curlers
Back Basket - Lip products: balms, lipsticks, lipglosses

Third Drawer
Basket - Skincare: Primers, make up removers, serums, eye creams, masks
Perfumes and make up remover wipes

Bottom Drawer
Haircare products: hairsprays, mousses, serums, dry shampoo, sprays

And thats just part of my beauty collection! My tanning products, body care and my skin care routine range is in my bathroom drawers which is fine because I have lots of drawers in my bathroom and don't need to move these products around whereas I like to be able to move my make up products around depending on where I am using them. I am loving this storage system because it makes it so much easier to get ready in the morning and it cost less that £50.

How do you store your beauty products?

Monday Beauties Blog hop

I have just discovered the Monday Beauties Blog hop through browsing my favourite bloggers online and this weekly event seems like a great way to find new bloggers to follow and to gain followers yourself.

This is the gadget you can add to your blog page to promote the blog hop. I have added mine :)

Created by Nykki from www.mymaneblog.com and co hosted by Kelly from beautyobsessed2.blogspot.com, every Monday bloggers are invited to share the links to their blogs and
support each other in order to gain more feedback and followers. The event starts at 11.30am Arizona time when Nykki posts the link for bloggers to add their page to, where the link will stay for Monday only so I love browsing through as many links as possible on this day and leaving comments for bloggers I have just discovered. It is important to add your blog every Monday because then you improve your chances of being discovered and your networking within the blogging world! This Monday the event will not be taking place because of the Christmas holiday so you have time to tweak your blog and find out more about this blog hop :)

Follow Nykki on twitter @mymaneblog to get updates on when the Monday Beauties Blog hop goes live and when it is time to add your link. Also follow her for updates on the latest #bbloggers chat on twitter at 8pm Sunday GMT. This chat is perfect for beauty bloggers old and new to get advice, share blogging tips and usually revolves around a chosen subject i.e. giveaways, using photos in posts etc. I find these chats extremely useful in building my knowledge of blogging, sharing links with fellow bloggers and simply to chat and enjoy talking about beauty with others who have a genuine passion for it too.

Japonesque brushes

I was recently sent brushes by make up brand Japonesque to try and jumped at the chance as I have always wanted to try products from the famous beauty brand now available in the UK in Boots and John Lewis stores.

The brand is well known for its range of brushes, tweezers, lashes and make up artist storage and travel solutions. It is a professional, impressive brand so I am so pleased that it is now available for everyone in the UK! I was sent a selection of travel brushes including Face, Eyes and Brows brushes and a gorgeous brochure containing stunning visuals and a look at all of the products available within the range.

One of my favourites in the range, the travel eye shadow crease brush. Perfect for applying/blending colours into the socket line to create a smokey eye. The wonderful packaging and information on the back means that even make up newbies can learn how to use the brushes with make up to create looks and get the most out of the tools. The full size brush is £12.75 from www.boots.com and is a great addition to any make up kit.

Another brush which stood out for me is the Powder brush which is £29.25 from www.boots.com. This soft, rounded brush picks up the perfect amount of loose powder or shimmer to dust over the face and body. Particularly good at this time of year when I am adding shimmer to my festive make up looks! At under £30 this is an investment worth making.

These two brow brushes are excellent! The first brow/lash comb is a must have for those with unruly eyebrows or eyelash clumping because it solves both these problems and prepares the brows or lashes for any products you want to use afterwards. At £9.75 from www.boots.com it is very affordable and a must have in my opinion. The second brush on the right is the brow definer which is £10.50 from www.boots.com and a great size for applying powder to the brows and making them look defined and styled to perfection.

The visuals from the brochure are stunning!

I love these brushes! They are soft bristled but with sturdy handles with simple yet effective branding and packaging. I would recommend them to any ladies building up a collection of brushes who don't want to spend the earth brushes but need a good quality range as part of their kit.

Find out more about the collection and buy online at www.boots.com and www.johnlewis.com

Berry red nails!

I mentioned in my birthday post that my boyfriend had bought me a berry red polish from the Nicole by OPI Kardashian collection in "Sealed with a Kris". This polish is named after the mother of the family, Kris Jenner, who always looks sophisticated and glamorous which is reflected perfectly in this deep red tone. The Nicole by OPI collection is cheaper than the regular OPI collection and therefore I expected the coverage and finish to look a little less luxurious than the original products however I was pleasantly surprised!

The used a strengthening base coat then applied two coats of the polish to my nails and toe nails and they stayed perfect for about 4 days without a top coat! I needed to remove them for work this week and will be trying out the other colour from the Kardashian collection this weekend ready for Christmas day, a dark glitter tone called "Follow me on Glitter", a reference to the Kardashians on Twitter (all of whom I follow for the latest gossip and style tips)!

I decided to pop this colour on my tootsies too as its the perfect festive shade and I like to match my toes and nails when possible despite wrapping my feet up in slippers and boots most of winter!

I will definitely be purchasing more colours from this collection, and Nicole by OPI because at £8.50 they are more affordable than OPI and the range of colours and textures allows you to get a professional finish with paying over £10 per polish.

Check out more of the range online at www.lenawhite.co.uk

Angela Langford Skincare

I was sent a sample pack of this natural skincare range about a month ago and have used it since to test the effects of a brand which uses natural and organic ingredients to work with the skin to provide effective results. The brand, created by Angela Langford, immediately appealed to me because the name of the brand gives it a personal touch and real sense of authenticity and an honest desire to provide the best products for the consumer. This was reflected in the personalised skincare pack I was sent and the personal note explaining how to use each of the products and why they would benefit my normal/combination skin.

Angela was extremely helping in choosing the right products for me and was readily available by email to answer any questions which was a real bonus in dealing with a small, personal company. I will give you a brief description of each of the products I tried and how I felt they worked for me.

Sweet Cheeks - Papaya and Cypress Daily face wash
(£15.45 100mls)

This gentle daily wash contains an array of ingredients to help clean and clear the skin of dirt and impurities including papaya, rose petals and jojoba oil. The packaging is clear and explains why each ingredients has been included and what its specific purpose is. This wash was light, comfortable on the skin and felt lovely in the morning. It also helped to dissolve away make up in the evening. It didn't foam which I liked, it just became creamy and then easily washed off. I would recommend to those who want a no fuss cleanser but with a gorgeous smell and benefits of natural ingredients.

Scrub Up - Fruit Extract Exfoliator
(£15.80 50mls)

The scrub is gentle enough for sensitive skin and ideal for using once or twice a week to slough away dead skin cells and leave skin radiant. The same effective ingredients from the face wash are included in this scrub too so the smell is once again beautiful and my skin was left fresh and soft. I would recommend this for scrub for people who don't usually like using scrubs because it is gentle and comfortable.

Freshen Up - Rose, Geranium and Orange Blossom Toner
(£10.35 100mls)

This toner smells quite strong but I adore it! It is refreshing and feels light on the skin and is the perfect follow on from the cleansing products because it removes the last traces of make up and dirt and leaves the skin radiant and feeling fresh. This was one of my favourite products in the range because I could see and feel the results.

Perfect Pores - Anti ageing, plumping and pore perfecting Specialist Serum
(£26.55 30mls)

This was another of my favourites from the range. The smell, texture and effects of this serum are wonderful and I love the fact that it does so much to help the skin in various ways. The active ingredients help improve the texture of the skin, reduce the appearance of pores and protect the skin from elements which can cause wrinkles. I enjoyed using this product because it felt lovely and I really felt like it changed the appearance of my skin.

Balanced & Beautiful - Rosehip and Kiwi Face Oil
(£22.55 25mls)

This oil was perfect for my evening cleansing routine and didn't feel uncomfortable as many face oils can because it was non greasy and light in texture. The smell was natural and relaxing which made it ideal for using before bed! It sank into the skin quickly and quickly hydrated. Because I have combination skin, I often worry about using oils on my face in case I end up with blemishes or an oily t zone however this oil is specifically formulated for combination skin to balance and refine the pores. A great starter product for those who are new to the range because it can be added onto the end of your current skincare routine.

Balancing Act - Lightweight Daily Face Moisturiser
(£27.15 45mls)

Another ideal product for combination skin, this moisturiser has a lovely texture which feels light and smells divine. The special plant extracts in it provide deep hydration whilst helping to get rid of excess oil. Ingredients such as Chia seed, Evening primrose and Hyaluronic Acid also protect against ageing and plump the skin. Perfect for those who like their moisturiser light in texture for day time use, especially for using under make up.

I was impressed with this range! The way that each ingredients is explained makes me feel like I am putting only the best onto my skin and each product was a pleasure to use. I used this range to give both my mum and sister a facial too and they both reported softer, more radiant skin the next morning and enjoyed the smells and textures whilst I was applying the products. If you want to invest in effective, natural skin care products with a personal touch then this range is the range for you. The packaging and website are clean and attractive but it is the products themselves that really make this a range worth trying out.

You can order a free sample pack and find out more about the range on the website www.angelalangford.com

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" - Christmas tag

I have to admit I hadn't been feeling particularly festive recently, that was until the Christmas tree went up! Lots of my favourite bloggers have recently done this Christmas post and today I woke up to snow outside so I thought it would be the perfect time to answer the questions too :)

1.What is Your Favourite Holiday Movie?

Miracle on 34th Street (1994) is my all time favourite! I have watched it hundreds of times and never get bored of it.

  2. Whats Your Favourite Christmas Colour?

It has to be berry red. Christmas is the perfect time to paint nails red and put on a dramatic red lipstick.

  3. Do You Like To Stay in Your PJs Or Dress Up For Christmas?

It depends on what the plan for the day is! Usually I stay in my pjs for most of the day but then I like to put a nice winter dress or long jumper on with my boots and take the chance to put some glitter make up on!

  4. If You Could Only Buy One Person a Present This Year Who Would It Be?

I wish I could buy my Grandad a present. He passed away earlier this year and this will be my first Christmas without him so I wish I could buy him some Whiskey which he used to love. I will be thinking of him on Christmas day :)

  5. Do You Open Your Present Christmas Eve Or Christmas Morning?

Christmas eve?! Surely no one does this?! That's when Santa delivers them! My sister's and I usually open our stockings in the morning and then open our presents from under the tree later on in the day. I like doing it this way because it makes giving and receiving presents a whole day event!

  6. Have You Ever Built a Ginger Bread House?

No I haven't! I am terrible at cooking but would love to create something festive in the Kitchen! I might attempt to make something this year but I don't think I will manage a house!

  7. What Do You Like To Do On Your Christmas Break?

Spend time with family and friends, watch Disney films, eat lots of naughty food and drink hot chocolate. All in my pjs of course.

  8. Any Christmas Wishes?

I want to wish all my friends and family health and happiness. Not very original but money can't truly buy either of those things!

9. Favourite Christmas Smell?

Its got to be a Yankee Candle in either Welcome Christmas or Christmas eve. Both smell incredibly festive and cosy.

10. Favourite Christmas Meal Or Treat?

Being a vegetarian, I can't say the traditional turkey so I would have to say a roast dinner with a nut roast and all the trimmings. I love brussel sprouts! For a treat I would choose either Ferrero Rocher or Guylian chocolates!

I hope you are all getting in the Christmas spirit! Ho Ho Ho!
I am tagging all my beauty blogging followers in this post, I would love to see your answers!
